Windows 7

Postby Wc is 4 Nubz » Mon Mar 01, 2010 1:56 pm

Hello all, I am Wc is 4 nubz, and I am a Windows fan. As we all know, Windows Vista failed. despite the latest and greatest graphics, there were just way too many glitches and bugs, and it was very easy to crash. When Windows 7 came out, everyone was like, "Wow, a complete copy of Vista..."
Windows 7 is actually different. The graphics are essentially the same, but the problems have been mostly fixed. I also like the new minimize/maximize options.

Just wondering, how many of you have used Windows 7, and how do you like it?

I don't like some of the default options - in particular, the taskbar icon grouping feature. Instead of showing the title of the windows you have open, it just displays the icon. Sort of annoying, but can be turned off easily enough. It still features the windowssxs folder: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa376307%28VS.85%29.aspx which eats ridiculous amounts of hard drive space and can't be turned off. That "feature" is horrible and needs to go, imo. Overall, though, it seems pretty good from my limited experience.

I like Windows 7 more than any version of Windows to this point. When I first installed it, I agreed with this:

However, I no longer think this way. I actually think that this setup is pretty sweet. Parking the cursor over one of the icons will bring up clickable thumbnials over every instance of that application currently open (including multiple tabs in some browsers, but not Opera. Grrrr). Also, Win+1 opens the first icon you have down there, Win+2 the second, &c.

The problem that I have (and this may be a hardware issue) is that sometimes after using the Win key, the computer acts as if it is still being pressed. It is not a mechanical issue; the key definately pops back up, and I have removed the key and pressed down on the post just to be sure. But, sometimes, after using the Win key, the system will perform windows shortcuts. This is especially annoying if I use it to open my browser and then type an address with an "L" in it -- system lock.

My computer is a first generation Dell Studio 15, and it is probably the crappiest thing I have ever accidentially purchased since my undergraduate education. So that could be part of the problem. I have Googled the -censored by the administrator- out of this issue but to no avail.

Anyway, Windows 7 -- pretty cool.

Actually, another nifty trick you can do is, if you go into the registry, you can change the hover-time required to make the little windows thingy pop up when you hover over the icons. I changed mine to 0 so it's instant, and even though it doesn't seem like that much of a big deal, it makes a big difference.

That would be incredible actually! I am going to go look for that now.

Yeah, another really neat trick is (if you use Firefox) there's a skin you can install that makes almost everything that isn't a textbox/button on the top transparent. I don't remember the name right now, but I'll post it when I get home. It makes it look SOOOOO awesome.

I'm about 30 mins in with Windows 7 and I really like it so far. Nothing frustrating has appeared yet so let's hope that can continue.
